Welcome to

West Hill Elementary School

At West Hill School, we create a safe, positive and welcoming learning community that embraces high expectations and ensures that every child reaches their full potential. Our exceptional staff is committed to supporting your child’s growth—academically, socially, and emotionally.  We are committed to creating communities of joy and belonging. It is our hope to partner with you to make your child’s elementary school experience rewarding and to continue the tradition of excellence that is a hallmark of West Hill.

At West Hill, we are deeply committed to meeting the unique needs of every child. Our school is proud to offer four specialized programs that nurture and support students in meaningful ways: Bright Beginnings, Kids in Progress (KIP), The Learning Center (TLC) and Compass.

All of our students benefit from a range of support services such as reading and math specialists, an English Learner (EL) program, a school psychologist, a social worker, occupational therapists, a BCBA, a physical therapist, special education teachers, speech and language pathologists, a certified library/media specialist, and various tutors and paraeducators.

Enrichment opportunities are available before, during, and after school, including math and science clubs, art, running, martial arts, a newcomer’s club, adaptive programs for students with special needs, and a READ therapy dog program.

Our teachers collaborate to support  students through the MTSS program, which has proven successful in improving student performance. We use the Second Step program for social-emotional learning (SEL) and Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) to foster a positive school climate. Students who exhibit positive behavior receive YES tickets, representing "Respect Yourself, Respect Others, and Respect the School." Each week, a student from each classroom is selected to receive a free book, courtesy of our PTO. Additionally, if the school earns enough YES tickets in a month, we celebrate with a school-wide Spirit Day!

Our School Improvement Plan focuses on enhancing academic achievement, tailoring instruction to students' unique needs and interests, and supporting their emotional well-being. Our Safe School Climate and MTSS committees meet monthly to assess our progress towards our stated goals in our School Improvement Plan.

We offer ongoing professional learning to support staff growth and student learning. Teachers have dedicated planning time and work in grade-level data teams to analyze student achievement and plan future instruction. Co-teaching and ongoing collaboration ensure that every student gets what they need.

We value the strong relationships we have with our West Hill Families and offer many opportunities for parents to engage in school life. Our August Meet and Greet, parent-teacher conferences, and Open House allow families to connect with teachers and understand the curriculum. Additional activities like Math, Literacy, and EL Family Nights, art shows, Family Fun Nights, concerts, and PTO functions further enhance home-school communication. Our school social worker also offers special parent programs before and after school. Our partnerships with families are integral to the success of our students!

All staff members are trained in ALICE (Alert- Lockdown- Inform- Counter- Evacuate) strategies to ensure proactive emergency responses. Each month, we practice safety drills throughout our school. Additionally, a School Resource Officer from the Rocky Hill Police Department is assigned to our school building. They are a constant presence in our school and are a valued member of our West Hill community.

West Hill School is proud of its Tradition of Excellence. We have been honored as a Blue Ribbon School and named a School of Distinction in 2016, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. In addition, we were selected by the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) as the 2019-2020 Elementary School of the Year!   Our school stands out in the top 5% of all Connecticut schools for overall Smarter Balanced Assessment scores, with math and reading proficiency ranking in the top 1%. We take great pride in our students and teachers and feel privileged to be part of such a wonderful and caring school community!
